Hindu activists support Meerut moral policing

Once again we can see how all fundamentalists are alike. Be it the morality police in Tehran, the Sikh fundamentalists in the past, or the present Hindu fundamentalists, their culture is the same. Use goonda tactics to police women. Morality is not established by brutality. The goondas of the Bajrang Dal are powerless to create a moral stir in India and hence have to resort to goonda tactics. When even one genuine moral leader emerges in India, people readily rally round him because despite their corruption they thirst for moral nobility as do all human beings. Today however the task of India is not to sit waiting for another leader but to be a moral beacon to oneself.

LUCKNOW: Activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and its ally, Bajrang Dal, on Thursday took to the streets in support of Meerut police, whose campaign against dating lovebirds in the city evoked sharp protests.

VHP activists even burnt effigies of some TV news channels that had taken the lead in condemning the police for beating couples meeting in public parks in Meerut city, barely 80 km from New Delhi, on Tuesday.

Wide protests followed on Wednesday after TV channels showed couples being roughed up by a woman police inspector and her sub-inspector, also a woman.

Public outrage compelled the state government to take punitive action against the guilty police personnel.

The two women police officials and their controlling officers, the deputy superintendent and superintendent of police, were suspended on Wednesday evening.

The residents of Meerut are demanding action against district police chief Rajeev Ranjan Verma.

Defending the officer, principal home secretary Alok Sinha said: "Appropriate action had already been taken against those who were directly responsible for exceeding the brief of tackling the menace of eve-teasing against which several complaints were made by local citizens."
