BANGLADESH: 50 die, 95825 arrest in the first 60 days of emergency
50 people died during operation by law enforcement personnel and 95,825 arrested in the first 60 days of the state of emergency from 12 January to 12 March 2007.Of the 50 people died as a result of actions taken by law enforcement agencies, 26 persons were died as a result by the activities by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), 12 by police, 6 by the army, 5 by joint forces and 1 by Navy.(Odhikar)

Of those 50 people who died, 24 were killed in alleged crossfire by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). It has also been alleged that 4 were killed by Police crossfire, 1 was allegedly killed by Joint force crossfire, 1 was allegedly killed by joint force, 4 were allegedly tortured to death by Police, 4 were reportedly killed due to torture by Army, 1 was reportedto have been tortured to death by Navy, 2 were arrested by RAB and later died in the hospital, 2 died in the hospital after being arrested by Police, 1 arrested by joint force and died in the hospital, 1 died in the hospital after being arrested by the Army, 1 died while trying to escape from the Army van which was carrying him, 1 jumped off a six storied building and died while in the custody of the Joint Forces, 1 was arrested by Joint Forces and died in the Police Station and 2 dacoits allegedly were shot dead by police.
Of the 50 it was reported that, 6 were from BNP, 3 from Awami League, 4 from Purbo Banglar Communist Party (Jonojuddho), 3 from Purbo Banglar Communist Party, 1 from Purbo Banglar Communist Party (Red Flag),1 from Biplobi Communist Party,1 from New Biplobi Communist Party, 2 from Gono Mukti Fouz, 3 from Sromojibi Mukti Andolon, 1 from Sarbahara party,1 from Aziz Group, 1 from Gangchil Bahini,1 from Hazi Bahini,2 were farmers, 1 was an alleged drug peddler, 1 was an under trial prisoner, 1 was a freedom fighter, 1 was a detained bus driver,1 was a bus driver according to his family source,1 was an arms dealer, 2 were alleged muggers, 2 were dacoits and 10 were alleged criminals.
Odhikar demands independent inquiries into all the above-mentioned extra judicial killings /deaths and that the results of such inquiries be made public.
Odhikar notes with appreciation the government decision not to allow law enforcement agencies to evict any more slums without its prior permission and hopes that the government will take a humane approach to the slum people’s issues.
