Modi pits tribals against Muslims in votebank battle
In an endeavour to pit the tribal votebank against Muslims in the ensuing Assembly polls, Chief Minister Narendra Modi has accused the Congress-led Central government of appeasing minorities at the expense of tribal rights and interests.

Gandhinagar, September 2:“Tribals should oppose religion-based reservations for Muslims,†said Modi while addressing the first of a string of rallies, which would popularise his Rs 15,000-crore Van Bandhu package to uplift tribals, in Khedbrahma here on Sunday.
Attempting to show that Muslim rights came at the expense of tribals’, the Chief Minister said he was the “brother of tribals†and would fight “shoulder to shoulder†for their rights.
“By extending reservations to converts, the central government wants to encourage conversions and harm the constitutional rights of tribals and Dalits. The Centre is playing a dangerous game by talking of giving first right on resources to Muslims and providing religion-based reservations to the minority community,†said Modi.
The post-Godhra riots had seen concentration in the north and central tribal belts, with the tribal populace attacking minority community for the first time in the history of the state. The subsequent mobilisation had also brought tribal voters to the BJP fold, resulting in the party cornering 15 of the 26 reserved ST constituencies in December 2002.
Repeating his threat to start a Satyagraha from October 2 if tilled lands were not delivered to tribals, Modi claimed his government had provided tilling rights over forestlands to 43,000 tribals.
“Another 3,500 applications are pending with the Centre,†he said to an audience of predominantly tribals.
The Van Bandhu package is a 10-point tribal area development project with Rs 15,000 crore to be spent over next five years on schemes that build infrastructure, human resource, health, education, and employment opportunities in the eastern tribal belt of the state.
Modi also said that his government would take action against those who were fooling the poor tribals and collecting money in the name of getting the lands allotted.
“Reports has been received that some people were collecting money from tribals for getting the lands allotted, and Rs 40 lakh has been collected from Sabarkantha. We would take action in this regard,†he said.
As part of the Van Bandhu package – a variety of number of existing state and central government schemes – Modi announced setting up dairy projects for Sabarkantha (Khedbrahma-Vijaynagar) and Banaskantha (Danta-Amirgadh). He also dedicated the newly-constructed Bhiloda-Shamlaji state road, 64 new ST buses on rural routes in the backward districts of north Gujarat.
