On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, Roots in Kashmir, a frontline group of the Kashmiri Pandits presented an audio-visual presentation and a panel discussion focusing on the Wandhama Massacre. Wandhama massacre refers to the murder of Kashmiri Hindus in the town of Wandhama on the intervening night of 25th January 1998.It was one of the worst incidences of violence against Kashmiri Pandits being carried out by militants in Kashmir. It was an illustration of the Kashmir militant's policy of ethnic cleansing .The victims, all of them Kashmiri Pandits, included four children, nine women and 10 men. Those killed were among the handful of Kashmiri Pandits who had resiliently chosen to stay back after the forced mass exodus of half a million Kashmiri Pandits due to the ethnic cleansing carried out by Pakistan sponsored terrorists in the Kashmir valley in 1989-90.

PRESS RELEASE

What however is truly bizarre is the fact that the Local Police have closed the Wandhama Massacre case citing "un-traceablility of the killers as the reason for closing the case". Sub Divisional police officer Ganderbal Showkat Ahmad, who was then Station House Officer for the area told Kashmir Times, "The case has been closed, as no one was identified as the killer of these Pandits."

This incident had attracted widespread condemnation and media coverage all over the world. This massacre forced the remaining Kashmiri Pandits to leave the valley.

Said Amit Raina," The case is in a way a microcosm of the apathy of the Government towards the Pandits. Ideally the government should have asked a better investigating agency like a SIT/CID or even a CBI to pursue the case so that the killers could be identified and nabbed, had its own Police proved incompetent to do the job. But that was not to be. As always the Police simply closed the case and thought its responsibility is over."

When we recently filed an RTI application with the Ministry of Home Affairs, asking for more information on the incident, they replied saying "Centre has no information about the incident, though they are aware of this massacre". It just goes on shows the biased policy of the Government of India towards the justice for Pandits said Aditya Raj Kaul.

On one hand the government is projecting to the whole world that they want to restore Kashmiriyat by bringing Pandits back to the valley while on the other there have been all but one conviction in the cases related to killings, kidnappings and other crimes against the Pandits. All the local militants who have been charge sheeted for killings of Pandits have been released on bail. These include ferocious terrorists like Yasin Malik,Bitta Karate and Javed Nalka. As long as terrorists like Bitta Karate,Yasin Malik and the perpetrators of the Wandhama Massacre are roaming free to kill, how can I go back to my home asked Radhika Kaul.

In New Delhi, almost 800 people participated in the seminar. Similar events were organised in other cities including Pune and Hyderabad.
